Cows are as varied as people. They can be highly intelligent or slow to understand, vain, considerate, proud, shy or inventive.Although much of a cow's day is spent eating, they always find time for extra-curricular activities such as babysitting, playing hide and seek, blackberry-picking or fighting a tree. This is an affectionate record of a hitherto secret world.'A lovely, thoughtful little book about the intelligence of cows.' - James Rebanks, author of The Shepherd's Life'…utter beguiling and exquisitely produced little book.' - The Daily Mail'… a delightful, spry and neatly crafted book.' - The Sunday TimesPublisher: Faber & Faber ISBN: 9780571336777

Reality Is Not What It Seems: The Journey to Quantum Gravity
Reality Is Not What It Seems: The Journey to…
Do space and time truly exist? What is reality made of? Can we understand its deep texture? Scientist Carlo Rovelli has spent his whole life exploring these questions and pushing the boundaries of what we know. In this mind-expanding book, he shows how our understanding of reality has changed throughout centuries, from Democritus to loop quantum gravity. Taking us on a wondrous journey, he invites us to imagine a whole new world where black holes are waiting to explode, spacetime is made up of grains, and infinity does not exist - a vast universe still largely undiscovered. The Book of Tides
The Book of Tides
An idiosyncratic, richly illustrated guide to Britain's rivers, seas and shores, for everyone who loves the water and the natural world - a Norwegian Wood for Britain's waters This is a book for those who want to understand better how the waters surrounding us affect our daily lives, how it imperceptibly but crucially shapes our actions, and has shaped our landscape for millenia. It's for anyone who knows and loves our coast, and who wants to understand, discover, surf, or sail it better. Inspired by his own witnessing of the power of the sea through travelling around Britain's coastline in a panel van with his young family, William Thomson tells the story of the cycles of the sea. He combines a lyrical, passionate narrative with graphically beautiful renderings of the main forms of water which affect Britain: Rip, Rapids, Swell, Stream, Tide, Wave, Whirlpool, Tsunami. The Book of Tides is a book for all of us who feel the pull of the sea and the tug of the tide. Ideal for anyone who enjoys the British coastline. This hardback book has 220 pages and measures: 24 x 16 x 2.5cm approx.

Wilding: The return of nature to a British farm
Wilding: The return of nature to a British farm
(paperback)COMING SOON: Published 3rd May 2018: Pre-order your copy now and we will supply your order as soon as stock is availableGeorge Monbiot’s fascinating polemic Feral, published in 2013, introduced many of us to the controversial concept of ‘rewilding’: allowing nature to reassert itself and restore damaged landscapes to something like their former, pristine states. Isabella Tree and her husband made a leap of faith in deciding to step back and let nature take over their traditional Sussex farming estate. The introduction of free-roaming cattle, ponies, pigs and deer has helped transform the landscape and allowed extraordinary increases in wildlife numbers and diversity in just a few years, with rare species like nightingales and turtle doves finding sanctuary here. This experiment has its detractors, but I’d say there’s an important, life-affirming message in this book about the capacity of nature to come back from the brink, if we’re willing to give it the space to do so.Publisher: PicadorISBN: 9781509805099

A Short History of Nearly Everything (Bryson)
A Short History of Nearly Everything (Bryson)
Edition Black Swan, 2004. ISBN: 0-552-99704-8. paperback. 686 pages, size: 12.7 x 19.7 x 4 cm. Just light tanning to paper edges. Other than that, the unread book remains in very good condition throughout: soft cover intact; text all clean, neat and tight. Prompt dispatch from UK.Amazon Review:What on earth is Bill Bryson doing writing a book of popular science--A Short History of Almost Everything? Largely, it appears, because this inquisitive, much-travelled writer realised, while flying over the Pacific, that he was entirely ignorant of the processes that created, populated and continue to maintain the vast body of water beneath him. In fact, it dawned on him that "I didn't know the first thing about the only planet I was ever going to live on". The questions multiplied: What is a quark? How can anybody know how much the Earth weighs? How can astrophysicists (or whoever) claim to describe what happened in the first gazillionth of a nanosecond after the Big Bang? Why can't earthquakes be predicted? What makes evolution more plausible than any other theory? In the end, all these boiled down to a single question--how do scientists do science? To this subject Bryson devoted three years of his life, reading books and journals and pestering the people who know (or at least argue about it); and we non-scientists should be pretty grateful to him for passing his findings on to us. Broadly, his investigations deal with seven topics, all of enormous interest and significance: the origins of the universe; the gradual historical discovery of the size and age of the earth (and the beginnings of the awesome notion of deep time); relativity and quantum theory; the present and future threats to life and the planet; the origins and history of life (dinosaurs, mass extinctions and all); and the evolution of man. Within each of these, he looks at the history of the subject, its development into a modern discipline and the frameworks of theory that now support it. This is a pretty broad brief (life, the universe and everything, in fact), and it's a mark of Bryson's skill that he is able to carve a clear path through the thickets of theory and controversy that infest all these disciplines, all the while maintaining a cracking pace and a fairly judicious tone without obvious longueurs or signs of haste. Even readers fairly familiar with some or all of these areas of discourse are likely to learn from A Short History. If not, they will at least be amused--the tone throughout is agreeable, mingling genuine awe with a mild facetiousness that often rises to wit. One compelling theme that appears again and again is the utter unpredictability of the universe, despite all that we think we know about it. Nervous page-turners may care to omit the sensational chapters on the possible ways in which it all might end in disaster--Bryson enumerates with cheerful relish the kind of event that makes you want to climb under the bedclothes: undetectable asteroid colliding with the earth; superheated magma chamber erupting in your back garden; ebola carrier getting off a plane in London or New York; the HIV virus mutating to prevent its destruction in the mosquito's digestive system. Indeed, the chief theme of this sprightly book is the miraculous unlikeliness, in a universe ruled by randomness, of stability and equilibrium--of which one result is ourselves and the complex, fragile planet we inhabit. --Robin Davidson

Well Test Analysis: The use of Advanced…
After a presentation of the various interpretation techniques proposed by all well test interpretation computer programs (straight line methods, pressure curve analysis, pressure derivative method), the advantages and limitations of the different approaches are discussed. With today's powerful graphic and computing facilities, the characteristic features of the many different types of wells and reservoirs are magnified, and a large catalogue of theoretical solutions is required for the analysis of transient test responses. More accurate and useful information is extracted from well tests. The interpretation models are reviewed for well, reservoir and boundary conditions. The models hypothesis and the influence of the different parameters are presented in detail. Application to field measurements is thoroughly documented.
